Common questions

What is the difference between a public and a private IP address?

Your router has one public IP address, assigned by your internet provider and shown above. Every device behind the router (computers, phones, printers) gets its own private address, usually starting with 192.168, 10, or 172.16 to 172.31. Private addresses are only meaningful inside your own network, which is why many offices use the same ones.

How do I find my computer's private IP or my router's address?

On Windows, open Command Prompt and run ipconfig. Your computer's address is listed as IPv4 Address, and your router as Default Gateway. On a Mac, open System Settings, then Network, then your connection, then Details. On a phone, look in the Wi-Fi settings for the connected network.

Why is my location wrong?

IP location comes from databases that map address blocks to places. Providers often register addresses at a regional hub, so the city can be off by 50 miles or more. A VPN, iCloud Private Relay, or a mobile connection shows the location of that service instead of yours.

Does my IP address change?

Most home and small-business connections have a dynamic IP that can change when the router restarts or the lease expires. A static IP never changes and is usually an extra-cost option from your provider. You need a static IP to host a server, run some VPNs, or be allow-listed by a vendor's firewall.

Can someone find me from my IP address?

Not your home address. An IP identifies your provider and a rough area. Only your provider can match an IP to a customer, and it will only do that for law enforcement with a legal order. To report abuse from an address, use the abuse contact shown in its registration details.

Why does this show IPv4 when I have IPv6?

This site is reached over the connection your device chooses. When a site offers only IPv4, your device uses IPv4 even if your provider supports IPv6, so only your IPv4 address is visible here.
